COVID19-03-13-20

UPDATED MARCH 13, 2020 @ 3:40PM

Dear GASD Parents/Guardians,

After a conference call with the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education this morning regarding the situation of Coronavirus (COVID -19), the state is not currently mandating the closure of schools, with the exception of Montgomery County. Although statewide guidance, provided by Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine, which goes into effect today, March 13, strongly encourages social distancing which includes the suspension of large gatherings and events for a two-week period. In addition, the guidance discourages individuals from traveling to recreational activities like gyms, movie theaters and shopping malls.

Despite the hope that we would receive a statewide decision on this issue; the state is leaving the decision of closing schools to the local level. The decision process for closing our schools was made in consultation with other local school districts, and other agencies; therefore, the Greencastle-Antrim School District will be closed from Monday, March 16 until March 27 with an expected return date of Monday, March 30.

As of today, there are no confirmed or presumptive cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Franklin County; however, we believe it is our responsibility to implement social distancing measures to protect our students and staff, and to mitigate the potential for Coronavirus to spread in our community. In addition to schools closing, the following actions will be taken:

  • There will be no educational programming for students during this time.
  • All extracurricular, athletics events/practices, and after school events will be canceled. This includes the closing of our athletic facilities.
  • All non-district organizations will no longer be permitted to use or rent district owned facilities before or after school hours, or on weekends during this time.

There are still many unanswered questions such as make-up days, Spring Break, etc. Please know that further communication will be issued to you throughout the next several days as we work through this unusual situation.

Sincerely,
Kendra K. Trail
Superintendent
